Lying between the lines of latitude, 57° North and 59° North are the counties of Caithness, Sutherland and Ross & Cromarty, all part of the Highland Region of Scotland. This remote part of the British Isles includes some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland, the coast ranging from dramatic cliffs to sweeping sandy beaches. Inland the contrasts are just as dramatic, gentle rolling and productive farmland in the Black Isle and parts of Caithness, the wide open splendour of the Flow Country of Sutherland and Caithness, to the harsh rocky landscapes of north west Sutherland and Wester Ross.

I live and work in the Caithness town of Thurso, within sight of Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of the British mainland. Thurso is the northernmost town on the mainland, situated at the northern end of the A9, 20 miles to the west of John O’Groats, and 110 miles north of the nearest city, Inverness.
