Sutherland
The origins of the name for the county come from the Southland or Sudrland of the early Norse settlers in Caithness and Orkney.
As a Scottish county the bounderies stretch from the remote far North West point of mainland Scotland, Cape Wrath, across the rugged interior including Strathnaver, the location of some of the worst of the Highland clearances, to the more heavily populatd East coast where the county town of Dornoch lies.
The county has coastline with the North Sea to the east and the Atlantic to the north and west. The land bounderies are with Caithness to the north and east and Ross and Cromarty to the south.
